The Tiger’s Nest Monastery, also known as the Paro Taktsang Monastery, is a sacred Buddhist site located in the Himalayan mountains of Bhutan. The temple was built in 1692, around the cave where it is believed Guru Rinpoche first meditated. This was the event that introduced Buddhism to Bhutan. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche was carried from Tibet to this cave on the back of a tigress, lending it the name “Tiger’s Nest.”

Tiger’s Nest is a working monastery today and still welcomes visitors daily. There is no vehicle that can make the trek, visitors must hike to reach the site.

This painting incorporates a palette knife for the cliff face and green shrubbery in the background to give it a rocky texture. Painting the scene invites us to ponder the four Noble Truths of Buddhism; the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering.
