It’s a new year! Hooray! New year’s resolutions, do you have one? What about if this is the year you explore, expand or excite your creative self?
The team at Cork & Chroma have felt many, many ways and thought many, many things about being creative. How? What? Why? When? We get excited, inspired, nervous, scared and joyful all at once. And we frequently meet with avoidance and procrastination, asking ourselves ‘should I create? The list goes on and the cycle continues…
These thoughts and feelings will always be apart of the creative process, but it’s a new year and we want to arm ourselves with some new tools to help with the journey ahead. One of those tools, podcasts!
We love podcasts. You can listen to them while you are creating, cleaning, walking or exercising, but there are so many to choose from it can be hard to know where to start. So we have put together a list of recommendations to get you going, no matter where you are on your journey. We’ve broken this down into phases you might just identify yourself with. Let’s go!
Woah, woah, woah my friend, don’t sell yourself short! You need to take a listen to Freakanomics Special Series ‘How To Be Creative’ (Ep354, 355, 368 – 370). The podcast explores what creativity is and looks at it from all angles, in all different fields and career pathways. It challenges the notion of what it is to be creative and proves that it is not just for the ‘arty’ types – there are lots of ways to create and inspire. Listening to this, you may just find out you have been creating all along!
We recommend starting with Art for All, and it is just that – art for all. No matter where you are on your journey, this podcast will have some tips and tricks for you as it encourages you to stop procrastinating and make, make, make! Our favourite episode is episode 03, ‘The Artist Who Couldn’t’. We won’t spoil it for you – take a listen.
Someone, somewhere has been where you are on your creative journey now. The Design Files Talks, Wowee and Magic Lessons with Elizabeth Gilbert are all fantastic podcasts where hosts interview a variety of guests. No doubt, there will be someone who you will be able to connect with, draw some inspiration and advice from.
If you are wanting something to keep you company while you are making, ArtCurious will have you ready for the next art question at pub trivia! Jennifer Dasal takes you through the history of art in the least boring way possible.
Or are you are too scared to start something because you are afraid of failing, or perhaps you have tried and failed before? Let podcast How to Fail be a newfound inspiration for you to get back on the horse. Elizabeth Day speaks to a variety of successful entrepreneurs, artists, writers and musicians from all different fields on their failures and how they grew from them. Elizabeth beautifully takes a positive from a negative, “Learning how to fail in life, actually means learning how to succeed better’.
If this is the song you are singing and you need some words of wisdom on taking your crafty creations to the next level, then you can’t go wrong listening to Starving Artist. Host, Honor Eastly, explores what it is to be an artist, how can you make a living from your work, what obstacles will you come up against and how you can overcome them. Chatting with a wide variety of artists and experts such as Frances Cannon, Abbey Rich and Wendy Syfret you will definitely pick up on some helpful tips, tricks and inspiration! It is an Australian podcast so if you live in Aus, it is very helpful, particularly when it comes to financials and tax issues.
Another great one is The Creative Pep Talk. A podcast that is just that – a pep talk for creatives. For some fresh perspective, new inspiration, marketing tactics, insights and pick-me-ups for when you are feeling down in your creative process, this podcast is a great listen.
Happy listening and happy creating! Here’s to you and your creative journey in 2020!
